Why is it a good idea to choose natural cosmetics?

It is safety and effectiveness in one. Natural cosmetics do not contain substances that are harmful to your health; they do not cause irritations or any side effects. At the same time, the carefully selected ingredients of plant and minerals help restore the skin's healthy condition and maintain its natural physiological functions. The effectiveness of natural cosmetics has been confirmed with numerous laboratory tests and research, which show that ingredients used in their production are tolerated and assimilated by the skin better than the synthetic chemical substances available of the market.

Is it possible to be allergic to natural cosmetics?

Some people may be allergic to the ingredients of certain preparations. Lack of tolerance of natural cosmetics is often an effect of an allergy to synthetic preservatives or colourings. Therefore, if you decide to use natural cosmetics, give up other care products that contain chemical synthetics. Mixing them could brings opposite results to your expectations.

What is the difference between natural and synthetic cosmetics?

The difference is in how each of these types of preparations react with the skin. Chemical synthetics take over the skin's functions, thus disturbing its natural rhythm and deactivating its regeneration processes. Natural cosmetics stimulate the skin and support it in its natural physiological functions.

What are parabens?

Parabens are used as product preservatives and are present especially in deodorants and antiperspirants, but can also be found in lipsticks, body lotions, shower gels, shampoos, peelings, etc. Their job is to block the formation of mold and microorganisms. As a result, products may sit on store shelves for long periods, maintaining both their freshness and dubious quality.

Parabens are considered to be very harmful substances - they cause cancer, disturb hormonal balance, disrupt the functioning of the immune and nervous systems, cause allergies and skin irritations. They penetrate the skin, getting into the blood stream and lymph nodes, thus impacting the condition of our entire system. They pose a threat to embryos and foetuses, which is why they should be avoided by pregnant and breastfeeding women.

An increasing number of studies point to the harmfulness of these compounds, yet noone is thinking of pulling them out of production. The only way to avoid parabens is to pay close attention to the labels on the articles we buy. Most often, more than one type of substance is used at the same time. Therefore, if you don't want to have anything to do with parabens, watch out for label items such as methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, isobutylparaben. These preservatives employed to extend the shelf life of cosmetics are chemical compounds of parahydroxybenzoic acid.

Make Me Bio products do not contain parabens.

What is SLS?

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is a commonly used foaming, washing and de-greasing agent present in the majority of marketed bubble baths, liquid soaps, shaving foams and shampoos.

Used regularly, it contributes to skin dryness and irritations, disturbs the secretion of sweat and sebum, as well as causes acne and itchiness.

SLS has long been used industrially for degreasing machinery and premises, due to its very low cost and high efficiency.

Studies conducted at the University Medical College of Georgia have revealed that SLS and SLES, once absorbed by the human system, accumulate in the tissues. In case of contact with the eyes of small children, they can cause damage, while in the case of adults, even cause cataracts.

All Make Me Bio products are SLS-free!

The history of cosmetics

The etymology of the word 'cosmetics' is not entirely clear. The common use of this term can be traced back to Ancient Rome, were slaves who performed massages at bathhouses were referred to as 'cosmetae'. The term is most likely derived from Greek, where 'kosmeo' means I make beautiful while 'kosmeticos' means beautifying.

Ancient cultures were fascinated with the beauty of the human body and their people paid great attention to maintaining it as long as possible. The beautification of the human body became an art that was developed and studied.

In Ancient Egypt, Nefertiti was the model of femininity. The famous bust of Akhenaten's wife gives us a glimpse of the make up standards of those times. Beauty canons gave preference to light-toned skin. Tanning was considered a thing of lower social strata, which is why women powdered their faces with light-coloured ochre and then drew thin blue veins on them to make the delicate, parchment-like quality of their skin stand out even more.

The women of those times used black or green kohl for eye make up, to make their eyes almond-shaped. Fragrant baths were commonly taken, and for special occasions, cones of fat with condensed perfume were placed under wigs. For personal hygiene, Egyptians used a paste with de-greasing and foaming properties made from a mix of ash and clay.

Egyptians took great care of their bodies. Women worried about wrinkles, while men were concerned about hair loss. A papyrus has been found containing detailed instructions regarding hair care as well as the preparation of ointments and creams. Special anti-wrinkle creams were also made. They were produced from, among others, wax, olive oil and cypress. A description of a special cosmetic was found in which, according to the notes it contained powdered alabaster, which was used for exfoliating the epidermis and smoothing the skin. It was most likely one of the first cosmetics equivalent to today's peelings.

In Make Me Bio products, we draw from traditional methods of making cosmetics and from natural ingredients with extraordinary properties such as purifying, peeling, regenerating or moisturizing.
